Amarone is respected as one of the finest wines in the World, and since 1990 has been granted DOC status (Denominazione di Origine Controllata), which in English means that the only grape used is from a small 10% area of the province of Verona and that the quality is controlled for drinking perfection.
The story goes, that the producer was trying to produce Recioto (a popular sweet wine) but forgot all about it and left it in oak casks until all the sweet sugars were transformed to alcohol. What he found was one of the greatest wines ever produced and decided to name it Amarone, which translates as "big bitter".
The final result is a very ripe, raisiny, big-bodied wine with very little acid or tannins. The labor intensive process used to dry and press the grape aides the production of this perfect wine. It was also Pavaroti's favorite wine!
This wine is ideal as a gift for someone VERY special, or to enjoy yourself (because you're worth it too).
